Piper of the Laird of Clan Grant, c. 1714, Richard Waitt

Céol mor (lit. "big music" also known as "piobaireachd" - "piping"), is the classical music of the píob mor (lit. the "big pipe", also called the Highland bagpipe). In this old form of [ipe music, there is a ground movement or theme, from which spring variations (much as in symphonies). This movement is called the "urlár" (lit. "new floor"). This section will act as the urlár of this site, a floor or groundwork for what is to come.

To acquire the information presented, I have drawn on many sources from many times, places, and disciplines. These include the historic record (beginning with Classical commentaries), native literature (oral and later written), the archaeological record, linguistic evidence, and most recently, scientific evidence in the form of DNA, which has in some cases negated the other sources, and in others seems to support them.

Over the years, I have constantly returned to these sources to find out what has changed, and what has been verified.

My increasing knowledge of socio-political and historic matters has also broadened my perspective, as have my deepening insights into the old poetry. None of this bars the "human" factor. Errors occur!

Conclusions, if any, are for the most part based on current consensus in the disciplines covered (where such exists). That which is "my opinion" is (for the most part) labeled as such, which you may accept or not, as you choose.

Though I have spent thousands of dollars over the years in acquiring the learning and materials set forth here, and probably as much again in disseminating them to seekers, I have seldom charged for my services or information, and then only because the money was needed for my family. I do not set a charge for anything that is solely my own here (other than some artifacts or similar items) - all is freely offered to those interested, as much of my learning was given to me by my late mentors. If you choose to contribute, and can afford to do so, it is welcome.

The artists and musicians on display here have offered some free examples of their work, but most also have work for sale. Please consider supporting their work by purchasing their art, music, or stories, etc., or make a donation to assist the project. (All material offered is either not copyrighted, or I own the copyrights, or permission to publish it has been granted to me by the owners, except as noted.)

As most of you know, bandwidth isn't free. Also, though my talented webmaster contributes far more time and effort than I can afford to reimburse him for, I contribute each month to his expenses to operate and maintain this site. (If you want a great designer and site, and / or an experienced E-business consultant, contact him!)

All expenses for this project (past and present) are out of my pocket. Therefore, any who can afford it, and wish to assist the project, may contribute to the effort, either with their work, skills, or otherwise. We no longer accept Paypal or credit cards, though we are currently seeking a progressive, principled firm and system to replace them. Meantime, checks or money orders in USD or Euro can be accepted.

Likewise, any of the items that are being sold can be purchased here the same way.
